Myles Smith has some of the kindest fans I’ve ever interacted with. I spoke with many of them while we waited for the show to begin, and everyone was so excited to be witnessing the British singer-songwriter’s first-ever show in Indianapolis. One of the things that stood out to me most was the range of ages in the crowd, from elementary school-aged kids to retirement-aged adults. It takes a special kind of artist to bridge a generational gap that wide, and Myles Smith is that artist.
He captivated the crowd from start to finish with his lyricism, myself included. I went into the show semi blind, knowing only his singles, but I found myself hanging on to every word. There was an intimacy to the way he performed that made the amphitheater feel much smaller than it actually was, a skill I’ve only really seen mastered by Ed Sheeran. Smith has a way of making thousands of people feel like he’s singing directly to them.
His band was incredible. They lifted one another up and seemed to make each other better musicians. Watching them perform, I saw a family on that stage, not just a group of coworkers. There was an undeniable chemistry between them, and that connection became part of the show itself. They provided the foundation and flow of the performance while Smith stood at the helm, confidently steering the night.
If you were to cover my eyes and plop me into this concert, I would have recognized his voice immediately. Myles sounds identical to his recordings. The live performance was an enhanced version of the studio recordings. In my experience, audio quality tends to decline when the artist is performing live, especially in an outdoor venue. This was different, much different.
By the end of the night, I was a Myles Smith fan. His ability to deliver studio-quality vocals while creating a genuine connection with thousands of people is something few artists can accomplish. I walked into the amphitheater knowing only a handful of his songs and walked out understanding why so many people knew every word.
