As a Latino, I always get excited when some of my favorite Latin artists stop by Phoenix, AZ. On Saturday, August 23rd, 2024, Argentine indie-rock sensation Surfistas del Sistema brought his dreamy soundscapes to Valley Bar for a night of vibrant music, dancing, and unforgettable moments.
The night kicked off with Los Nasdrovia, hailing from Nogales, Sonora, MX. Their warm, high-energy set perfectly set the stage, priming the crowd for the headliner.

When Fran Frione, better known as Surfistas del Sistema, finally stepped onstage with drummer Sami Mendoza, the audience packed in close, cheering with anticipation. Fran, known for his effortlessly stylish looks, was decked out in head-to-toe Adidas: baggy camo pants, sneakers, and a black mesh tank. One striking detail stood out, a Palestinian flag pin on his guitar strap, a small but powerful touch that didn’t go unnoticed.
From the moment he strummed his first chord, the room pulsed with energy. Couples swayed together, fans sang along, and the whole space seemed alive with Fran’s infectious charisma. About three songs in, he paused to greet the crowd, laughing about Phoenix’s scorching weather: “Mi primera vez en 42 grados” (“my first time being in 42°C weather”).
In a unique twist, Fran opened the floor for song requests, giving fans a chance to shape the setlist. The crowd eagerly shouted out deep cuts, including tracks he admitted he’d never performed live. Instead of brushing them off, Fran leaned into the challenge, grabbing his guitar, working out the chords on the spot, and treating fans to raw, impromptu snippets of songs that had never before been heard in concert. It felt like an intimate gift, creating a once-in-a-lifetime experience.
One particularly touching moment came when a fan named Perla requested the song “Embrujo.” Fran invited her onstage to sing with him, though she shyly declined at first, joking, “What if you sing up there and I watch from down here?”After some encouragement, she eventually joined him, blending her voice with his as the crowd cheered. Their duet was heartfelt, and Fran even complimented her vocals afterward, making the moment even sweeter.
Throughout the night, Fran ripped through fan favorites like “Hong Kong” and “Te Miro Para Ver Si Me Ves Mirarte.”At one point, he jumped offstage and shredded his guitar right in the middle of the crowd, breaking down barriers between artist and audience.
As the set reached its climax, the crowd eagerly awaited one final song, “La Magia Está en Tu Piel.” When Fran finally played it, the entire room erupted into song, everyone dancing and singing every word.
Surfistas del Sistema is currently continuing his U.S. tour, with additional dates across Latin America and Europe soon to follow. CLICK HERE for more information.
